Birsfelden has many institutions in the Swiss education system. They range from nursery schools to primary and secondary schools. The commune also has a music school for instrumental instruction, rhythm and singing.
Children enter nursery school at the age of four. Nursery school is part of the primary school level and attendance of this is compulsory. Lessons take place in the morning and once a week in the afternoon. The nursery schools themselves do not offer lunch or general childcare in the afternoons.
After two years of nursery school, the children move onto primary school, where they stay for another six years. This is followed by secondary school up to grade 9, which marks the end of compulsory schooling and a transition to grammar school, vocational training or secondary school outside Birsfelden.
